Safety comes first

As part of a team building exercise, the PRP staff participated in a 'Basic First Aid at Work' training course with the company, Safety First Aid. The course included, understanding the principles of emergency aid, learning basic life support (CPR), recognising the control of bleeding and responding to choking and unconsciousness. The programme was led by First Aid Trainer Christine, who split the day into two sessions. The first part consisted of Q&A and E-learning, whilst the second half revolved around practical assessment. To start us off, Christine took us through some simple points of first aid. This included:

The three P's of first aid: Preserve life

                                                   Prevent things from getting worse

                                                   Promote recovery

and the ABC model for CPR: Airways (must be clear)

                                                        Breathing

                                                        Circulation / Call 999

After discussing this further and watching an informative first aid video, we were then able to put our knowledge to the test with the help of a manikin that we named 'Peter.' We all had the chance to practice CPR and the Abdominal Thrust movement and even helped an 'unconscious' Phill into the recovery position. Overall, the session was very useful and we all had a good laugh.

We are pleased to report that all the PRP team passed and we are now qualified first aiders (we even have cards to prove it). We would like to thank Christine and the team at Safety First Aid for their fun-packed day. We'll be sure to see you in a few years time for a re-freshers course...
